Birthday Candle Poem

7/30/2015

Brave little flame
leaping bright and hot
what precious wonder
is new love?
To fan and feed
such delicate young fire
this is my zenith
this my big-drop rush
this glass secret
dancing prism embers
this tiny birthday candle
held carefully, just so,
then as the wax heats
and the dread flame nears
how long dare I hold on?

Overcast Forecast

This week a cloud
has swallowed Queens
a humidity
that makes things grow
somewhere along
the 7 line
somewhere between
your self and mine
a bloom, a kiss
pink petals blink
a park bench where
old mangy pigeons
roost and roar
like subway engines
some new garden
has begun
like delicate new rain.

Damned Poets

Been reading a lot of Allen Ginsberg's poems.  In the intro to "Howl and Other Poems" his friend William Carlos Williams wrote: "We are blind and live our blind lives out in blindness. Poets are damned but they are not blind.  They see with the eyes of the angels."

Infidelity

We are the damned, you know,
sharing sad all-seeing souls
but I won’t drink your angel songs again.

I lie. I do. When I am lost
I read and take a sip
of your sad longing
one sip before deleting
like the poison I deserve.

            You preferred my words
            to my desire
so while I’ve kept my body
            a reluctant shrine
            my words I’m serving up
            a poet whore
whose words come cheap and free

            and haven’t told you
            where my brothel lies.

Warning

Dumb little cat
swallows her world whole
devouring life faster
than her body can absorb.
                Again tonight,
it's chewed her back.
This is what happens.
This is what happens
when your hunger
exceeds your strength
when, hell bent, you must
have love and fear and beauty
all at once.
But she is mine
and so her appetite
will not be taught.

One Song Dance

Lots of salsa dancing in my life lately and thus my year-long over-use of dance metaphors continues...

One Song Dance

My incongruous angles
perplex you, of course
so just lead me through
some interesting spins
of course you can
just grin dizzy with me
don’t think too much
sweep me round swiftly
thrown back like whiskey
lead strong, I’ll keep time
the music's not stopping
so neither should we
in this low light
everyone is beautiful
oh let’s fall in love
all reckless and wild
the castle is empty and ours
for this one song.

    Heather Lee Rogers

I write and perform poetry.  I have been published on many websites and print publications at various times throughout my life. I live in NYC where I also create as an actor. Acting makes me forget that I'm a poet for long stretches of time.  But I mean to work on that here: I'll be posting old poems, new poems, and everything in between. Thanks for visiting.  Enjoy!
